A state law requires a specific set of vaccinations for students entering the 7th grade. If your child has had the vaccinations we need a copy of the vaccinations on record here at school. You can contact your child’s care provider and have them fax the records to 740-998-2317, you can upload the up-to-date shot records to Final Forms, or you can send in a copy with your child and have them turn it into the Middle School office. From Adena Schools Food Service Hello, Next week we would like to begin adding some hot meals and a-la-carte items in the cafeteria. Remember, everyone can receive free lunch and breakfast at this time. We do want to let everyone know that students can only eat one lunch and breakfast free each day and then additional food has to be purchased. Adena Schools COVID-19 Reporting System The latest order from the Ohio Department of Health requires that school districts maintain a reporting system for parents to report positive tests and/or cases of COVID-19. Parents and school staff who have been diagnosed with COVID-19, whether by laboratory test or clinical examination, should notify their school district no later than 24 hours after receiving a confirmed diagnosis. Substitute Custodians Needed!!! The Adena Local Schools need substitute custodians. Candidates should possess a valid Ohio Driver’s License and reliable transportation, be in good physical condition and be able to pass a drug/alcohol screening test. Candidates also need a valid FBI/BCI background check. Salary is 13.72 for day shift, 13.77 for second shift and 14.22 for 3rd shift. Substitute Drivers Needed!!! The Adena Local Schools sorely need substitute bus drivers. We have drivers who will retire in the next few years and our substitutes will be needed to fill some vacant positions. Qualified drivers Candidates must be at least 22 years of age and should have a valid Ohio driver’s license, with no drug and alcohol related violations or serious moving citations. You will need a clear FBI/BCI background check and must pass a drug/alcohol test prior to starting training. The district pays for the training and prepares you to pass the license test (CDL with School Bus Validation). Substitute drivers earn 14.00 per hour. Hello, and welcome back to Adena Local Schools! The Covid19 pandemic has become a historical event in the lives of our children. Books will be written, documentaries produced, and new ways of life will result from the experiences we have lived through, especially when it comes to school. This year we are optimistically planning to open school back up for those who wish to attend in person. That means we will still have to do things differently than we did before March arrived. The fact remains however, that we are still Adena Schools and we are still here to serve the needs of our children and the community. We are glad you are back. We hope you will enjoy your year. Below is an example of how things are a bit different… We can’t bring in thousands of people for Open House like we did before. However, we can find new and creative ways to bring Open House to you in a convenient digital format you can enjoy from home! There are folders for the Elementary, Middle and High School. Click on the folders and staff for your children and meet your new teachers. You can tell they have been isolated for quite a while. Many of these videos are very “unique” to put it mildly. High School Students and Parents, This is a reminder of some important dates. Tuesday, September 8th-Freshman and sophomores report only. Wednesday, September 9th- Juniors and seniors report only. Thursday, September 10th-All in-person students attend. Online students begin Tuesday, September 8th. These are the correct dates. Senior Night for our fall student-athletes is scheduled for Friday, September 18th. The Senior Night activities will take place prior to the varsity football game against Piketon that evening. Middle School Reminders: The 5th and 7th grade students will report to school only on September 8th and 9th. The 6th and 8th grade students will report to school only on September 10th and 11th. All middle school students will report on September 14th. Middle school schedules were mailed out last Friday. Adena Local Schools Fall Athletic Event Update: Per Ohio Department of Health Order: 15% capacity at all sporting events. With this order, visiting teams will get two tickets per student-athlete at the high school and junior high levels for volleyball and football events. For varsity football and volleyball events, the home team will receive the following ticket allotment. Volleyball- 4 per player for jv/var. Football-11/12 grades up to four. 9/10- two each. Cheer- 11/12 grades up to four. 9/10 two each. Marching Band- 11/12 grades up to four. 7-10 two each. All lower level events will be four per student-athlete for the home team. $5- tickets for all athletic events 7-12. Senior Citizen-$3(unless board changes policy). No SVC passes accepted. MADE passes can be accepted for students that have a ticket for the event.
A message for all parents of last year's kindergarten students. We would love to have some closure with our Kindergarten students from last year, now first graders. I know they would love to say a proper good-bye to their teachers. We are inviting only parents and the student to come to school on Thursday, September 3rd, according to the following schedule: Mrs. Bluck - 9:00am, Mrs. Bakenhaster 10:30 am, Mrs. Bush 12:30 pm. and Miss Frankel 2:00 pm. Please park in the front of the building and we will recognize our students and present them with another diploma under the white tent that is in the front. To parents/guardians of all Kindergarten students. All documents must be turned into Final Forms for in-person as well as online students. ADENA SCHOOLS LATCHKEY 2020-2021 The Adena Local Schools will be able to offer afternoon latchkey services during the 2020-2021 school year. There will be 18 slots available (and possibly a maximum of 36 if staffing can be obtained) on a first-come first-serve basis. The cost is $5.00 per day, per child and each succeeding child in the family at $4.00 per day. Students must be at least 5 years of age and be no older than 12. IMPORTANT CHANGES to ADENA’S CALENDAR PLEASE READ CAREFULLY The restarting of school is underway. We are still awaiting some materials needed for protective barriers but in all, things are going very well. We are, however, going to DELAY the opening of school for students until September 8th to give us time to ensure all materials are in place and also observe the results and make adjustments as we watch districts opening up early. This will also give us time to watch the numbers and data for Ross County which has experienced an increase in infections and hospitalizations recently. Important Update Adena Local Schools The deadline for signing up for remote learning for the 2020-2021 school year is being extended to Friday, August 7 at 3:00 p.m. As we have established from the beginning, our restart will be subject to change at short notice. Due to Health Department guidance, elementary students will not go to their last year's classrooms on the first day of school. This will create a situation for students/teachers to be exposed to more people than necessary. We apologize for this. Students will report to their new classrooms on the first day of school. Good Afternoon, This message is for the high school students and parents. On August 6th, I will begin contacting each parent or guardian that has registered for their student to go online to set up an appointment. Each family will have to come to the school at the scheduled date and time to meet with me to go over the online expectations of the teacher, student, and parent/guardian. If a student does not currently already have a school Chromebook, they will receive one then. Each student will also receive their online schedule. Every student that registers to go online will be required to attend their online classes at the scheduled times. They will have live online instructional classes everyday, except for Friday. They will be in attendance in these online classes for at least two and a half hours a day, during the school day. Each student will also be required to watch pre-recorded lessons when they are assigned. On the days they don’t meet with a teacher, they will be submitting an assignment online that is assigned that day. Other assignments will be assigned throughout the week that connect to the online class sessions. If there are students that have no internet, other arrangements will be made for them and that will be discussed during their appointment. Our staff will be using a combination of Florida Virtual curriculum and their own Google Classroom content for each of their classes. If we do get into the situation where all students end up online, they all will have a set schedule of times in the day they will need to log on and attend their classes. Attendance will be taken in all of these classes. In summary, there will be attendance taken daily for those students attending online. They will be expected to follow their schedule and attend their classes at their scheduled times. Stay patient, positive, and take it one day at time. We will get through this together! Quick Update: Adena School Reopening We received some more information, guidelines and directions from the Ohio Department of Education this morning. We will process this information, continue our work and refine our requirement list for opening in the fall. Expect the survey by July 20th at the latest. Many are interested in the start date of school. We intend to begin with a staggered start on the original calendar in order to complete required tasks that have been strongly encouraged by ODE, prepare the students to understand and get ready for new ways of doing things as well as become comfortable with the new practices and procedures of school, and give our very young students the chance to have closure for their previous class and teacher. All students will be attending regularly by Labor Day. We know we won’t start early or insert long breaks between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. We know we will respect the Ross County Fair schedule. We will give you plenty of advance notice on the staggered start schedules and any other important information. Please rest assured we are looking at many things and will prepare you to ease into the 2021 school year with as little stress as possible. We know it is hard to wait for information, but our intent is to not get in a hurry and get it done correctly. We appreciate your patience and understanding. Have a great weekend!
District Update from Superintendent John Balzer These are definitely “trying times” for all of us as we try to find our way through the COVID 19 pandemic. We want to give you a general update on what we are doing as we prepare to have school in August. First, we have to put aside all politics, social media myths, debates (and occasional rants) to examine the real science of this virus and determine what we need to do in order to provide a safe environment for our students and our staff while they are at school. Safety always has to be the first priority. Remember, we also have to think about students’ families- many caregivers are grandparents who are in a high-risk category. We have to remember that some student’s parents or siblings may be undergoing cancer treatments or have pre-existing health conditions that place them in high risk groups. We must remember that when we bring all the kids to school, we also set up a situation where viruses can be distributed throughout the community in a highly efficient manner. It’s up to us to see to it that if we have school all are protected and we do all we can to prevent the spread of COVID. We are working with the Ohio Department of Education guidelines established by the Governor’s office. We have the guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics. We are working with the Ross County Health Department as well. It is our goal to provide five days per week instruction for all students who wish to attend. We are developing an online school program for students who wish to learn from home until there is a sanctioned vaccine available. At this point in time, we believe that students need the opportunity to attend school for the social benefit and to receive the needed instruction along with the benefits of participating in the extra-curricular activities that balance out the overall educational program in order to create a well-rounded student. The focus each day should easily be learning and socialization with safety practices quietly in place in the background of day to day operations. In order for the district to provide the opportunities our students should receive, we will need the support and cooperation of parents, caregivers and the community. The politics removed, we have to create a safe environment that is practical, manageable, and doesn’t cause unnecessary stress to, or frighten our children- especially our little ones. If we can work together to accomplish the necessary safeguards that would enable us to bring all 1200 students back to the building, we can offer our students something very close to schooling they experienced prior to the arrival of COVID. Now that we finally have the Ohio guidelines, our next steps are to establish the needed plans for operations in large congregate settings like lunch, transportation, hallway traffic, playground and extracurriculars. We have to implement extra sanitation practices with the custodial staff. There will be stricter limitations on access to the building from the public. We believe we can accomplish this if we can get all stakeholders to cooperate and support our efforts to reopen. We need to hear your voices. We will be sending an important survey out in the coming days to get your input. Please help us by taking the time to sit down and participate in the process. Remember, nobody is going to be completely happy about how things will look going forward. It is complicated, it is frustrating and it is sometimes very tense. We owe it to our children to leave them out of all of the politics and turmoil that only create fear and unrest in their minds. I think we as a community can come together and establish common ground over what are appropriate and acceptable precautionary measures that will allow us to safely resume school- the one thing that keeps our children feeling like things are pretty “normal.” The Village has always come through for the children in the past, and I have no doubt we can do that in this situation as well. Together, we will find a way to work through what might be the most important issue of the pandemic. When our kids look back at this part of our history and tell their children about it, let’s hope their response will be that, “We were Warrior Strong and worked to make sure we all got through it together.” As the district leader, I sincerely appreciate your interest and support in the school system. Prom will be Saturday, July 18th at the Sunroom at the Brick. Dinner will start at 7 p.m. with the dance immediately following until 11 p.m. Tickets are $5 for MADE members that can show their card and $10 for non MADE members. Tickets are presale only and can be purchased Monday, July 6, Tuesday, July 7, and Wednesday, July 8 from noon to 2 p.m. and from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in front of the school. There was a dance waiver and a Southern Ohio Axe Throwing waiver sent to the juniors and seniors through their school email. Both forms must be signed by a parent and turned in at the time of ticket purchase. Please print those and bring them with you when you come to purchase your ticket or bring a parent with you to sign the forms. No exceptions! FinalForms allows you to complete and sign enrollment, back-to-school and athletic participation forms for your students. The most exciting news is that FinalForms saves data from season-to-season and year-to-year, meaning that you will never need to enter the same information twice! FinalForms also pre-populates information wherever possible, for each of your students, saving you time. You may review your data at any time to verify it is current. You will be required to sign your forms once per year and after any update. On July 1, You will receive an account confirmation email from FinalForms. Our graduation ceremony will be live on our Facebook page at 4pm on Saturday. The FM radio station the ceremony can be heard on will be 98.1 for those in attendance. The PA also carries very well after testing it today. The parade route will be the following: We will turn left out of the school .The parade will follow 550 into Frankfort and continue to the intersection at Main St. We will turn left on Main St. At the intersection next to the gas station, we will continue forward down N. Main St. and turn left on to Adena St. We will then turn right on County Rd. 87 and follow it to Clarksburg. Once in Clarksburg, we will turn left onto 138 and follow it out of town. This is Dustin England, Adena Middle School Principal, with important announcements about the final week of school. The final day for an assignment to be sent to the teacher for grading purposes is Thursday, May 28th. Make sure your child has completed the assignments posted to Progressbook. Final end of the year grade cards will be posted to Progressbook the following week. The 8th grade completion ceremony video will be posted at the end of the week. Your child will also receive a copy of the video in their email for your viewing pleasure and it will be posted to our social media outlets. Finally, the Chromebook return has been set for Monday, June 1st from 3-6 p.m. Every middle school student who borrowed a Chromebook during the time of the pandemic will need to return Chromebook on this date. It will be a drive by drop off set up out front of the MS/HS entrance. Please return the Chromebook and charger during this time. Though the school year is not ending the way we would have hoped it would have, I can truly say I am proud of the efforts of the students during this challenging time. Good Morning, Below is the link to our 33rd Annual High School Academic Awards Ceremony. I speak for our staff, when I say thanks to all the parents and students for what we have accomplished this nine weeks. I want to thank our staff for adjusting quickly, with no preparation, to keep up with their curriculum as much as they could while going online and learning new teaching strategies to adapt to the situation. This nine weeks, we will end up with well over 90% participation online in the end and that is contributed to the resilience our students have shown. I have told the students many times in emails that this is like a marathon. It has been a daunting task, but now we are seeing that finish line. Locker Clean Out will start next week: Only 10 people at a time will be permitted in the building. Everyone entering the building must wear a mask. Everyone will enter through the front of the building. If a line forms outside please make sure you are using social distancing and standing 6 feet apart. Garrett Clark is a senior at Adena High School. After graduation, Garrett will attend Shawnee State University to earn his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Digital Simulation and Game Programming. An announcement for Students and Parents at Adena High School: As much as we would love to hold a traditional graduation ceremony for our seniors, we must abide by the guidelines set by the Ohio Department of Education and the Ohio Department of Health. For the past few weeks, we have been trying to find ways to give our seniors an alternate graduation setup that will still allow them to celebrate their special day together. With input from members of the senior class and guidance from the health department, we have come up with a drive-in setup that will have close to the same agenda of a traditional ceremony. We are excited to be able to give the students a chance to walk across the stage and celebrate as a class with social distancing measures in place. Attached is the document that describes the Adena High School Commencement ceremony that is scheduled for May 30th at 4 p.m. The event time and possibly the day could change pending on weather conditions. The ceremony will be Facebook live streamed for those not in attendance. If you live close enough, you may be able to pick it up on a designated radio station. There will be a car parade after the ceremony to send off our Senior Class of 2020. There will be a form going out to all the seniors later today asking pertinent information that we need to know to begin preparing for the drive-in ceremony. A message for the high school: All students in grades 8 thru 11, recently received an email from Mrs. Shea that includes our course catalog and course registration instructions for the 2020-2021 school year. The registration process will be beginning soon, so please review the course catalog and contact Mrs. Shea for any questions. Our Academic Awards Ceremony will be a virtual event held on Tuesday, May 19th at 9:00 a.m. Any type of award will be given to their recipients at a later date. Dear Students and Parent/Guardians, I know that there are questions regarding how grades will be determined for the fourth nine weeks of the 2019-2020 school year. It's our hope that the following will answer any questions you may have about the process. While we recognize that there is no “perfect” systematic approach for this situation, it is our objective to create a system that is equitable for all students. All grades for the fourth nine weeks of the 2019-2020 school year (March23rd - May 28th) will be based on a pass/fail grade for Adena Middle School. The grades will be calculated based on the assignments that have been posted to Progressbook. Please make sure you are checking Progressbook and keeping up with your assignments and the work that has been provided by the teachers. The final grade for the year will be calculated by averaging the first three nine weeks together to get the final grade for the year. Interim grades were scheduled to be posted this week, please make sure you are checking Progressbook this week to see your child’s progress. If they are behind they have time to get caught up. Assignments are being accepted that are late, they just need to stay on top of it for the remainder of the quarter. An announcement for the high school: Jostens will be at the front entrance of the high school delivering announcements and other graduation products on Friday, May 1st from 9 a.m.- 11 a.m. This will be a “drive-thru” delivery. The student or parents pull up, roll their passenger window down and they will place the order in the passenger seat. If that doesn’t work, they can place the order in the trunk of the vehicle. Revised Graduation Plan 4-24-20 Seniors and their families, After we postponed graduation yesterday, we received an email from the Ohio Department of Education issuing guidance and a clear message to avoid “congregate” graduation ceremonies, and that schools should not postpone or delay graduation dates in hopes of providing a traditional graduation ceremony. We will use our originally scheduled date of Saturday, May 30th. The time is changed to 4 p.m. We will employ an alternate plan of graduation that we believe still gives our students a meaningful and safe ceremony. We will provide a description and instructions for the event to each student’s family so they can know what to expect and how to prepare. We will ask that everyone please understand their cooperation will be needed to make this work in a safe and responsible manner. We wanted to get the changes out to you as soon as possible to avoid creating any more hardship for families than has already occurred. Thank you, Josh Jones
Kirk Elder is a senior at Adena High School and also attends OUC for Sports Medicine through Pickaway-Ross CTC.. Kirk became a State Tested Nursing Assistant last summer and has been working as an STNA since then at Edgewood Manor of Greenfield. He plans to continue his education in nursing through Southern State’s RN program following graduation. We are so sorry that you have to miss out on some of the most memorable days of your life that we know you have been anticipating and planning for awhile now. Trey Timmons is a senior at Adena High School. After Trey finished his requirements for graduation earlier this year in January, he started working full time for his father's business at M & M Fabrication. Trey has been accepted to the University of Cincinnati where he would like to possibly pursue his interest in structural engineering but hasn't made up his mind if he will be attending this fall. He has developed a joy in landscaping using heavy equipment and is quite good at it, so this is also an area that his interest is directed to. Good Afternoon, This is Adena Superintendent John Balzer with a reminder that we will honor our seniors this evening at 8:20 by lighting the stadium to recognize their achievements and contributions to our school and community over the past 13 years. We have made arrangements to allow our seniors to meet in their cars at the school parking lot between 8:00 and 8:15 to form a senior procession which will be escorted by law enforcement down 550, passing the field and ending at the fire station. From there, students will be expected to head home. We will get a recording of this procession to post and share with students who want a copy for their school memorabilia collection. Again, we ask that you do not plan to go onto the field which will be closed due to the crowd restrictions we must adhere to during the stay-at-home order. We will make time available for photos with your seniors in the stadium when we are permitted to do so and we will give you plenty of advance notice. Also, I would like to ask all residents of the Adena Local School District to participate in recognizing our senior class by turning on your porch light from 8:20 to 8:40, resulting in twenty minutes of light for the Class of 2020. Kayana Newsome is a senior at Adena High School. She also attends Ohio University of Chillicothe and will receive certification in Sports Medicine. She has worked as an STNA for two years and will continue her education at Southern State Community College to obtain a nursing degree. Kayana plans to become a labor and delivery nurse. Our hearts are broken because your senior year has been way less than expected, and that you are missing out on some of the traditional senior experiences. Update from Adena Superintendent John Balzer Good Afternoon Warrior Nation! Tomorrow, April 20th, we will honor our Seniors, at 20:20 (8:20 p.m.) by lighting the stadium lights for 20 minutes. This is a symbolic gesture to recognize the 13-year journey these outstanding young men and women have taken to reach the point in life where they set off to make their way in the world. Theirs hasn’t been the easiest of journeys. However, this group of students have formed bonds of friendship that will last a lifetime and experienced many significant achievements in spite of obstacles that threatened to block their paths. This group of students have been tested far more in spirit, determination and unity than most groups. They’ve demonstrated they have the strength and conviction to stand together as the Village when one of their own needs them to be there. As crowd restrictions remain in place, we cannot open the stadium or promote gatherings during this recognition. Hopefully the Governor will announce needed details early this week so we can begin making firm plans for what comes next. As soon as the restrictions ease up, we will announce the opportunity to come back to the stadium for pictures when we are able to do so safely. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation. Monday evening we encourage you to drive by and have a look from the road. You might stop or slow down to take a quick picture from the car, but please don’t create a crowd situation that would possibly promote or worsen community spread of the virus or create safety hazards by impeding traffic. For you, Seniors, Monday night the lights will shine brightly. The stadium will be empty and silent, but the light will provide witness to the integrity, determination, courage, commitment and Warrior pride the Class of 2020 has demonstrated from Kindergarten through their senior year, in spite of the challenges presented this year by a global pandemic. The light will symbolically represent the character and accomplishments the Class of 2020 have forged from absolute determination and spirit. Although it has not been the spring we wanted for our children, we can celebrate the fact that the Class of 2020 has successfully learned the lessons of character, the reward of hard work and perseverance and the importance of unity and community pride. The Village will be well represented and fortified when the graduates of 2020 take their places beside us. It’s not over yet, Class of 2020- all is not lost! You were born at the time of the September 11 terror attack, lived through a financial collapse and recovery, numerous other moments of political and social upheaval and now a pandemic virus. You have what it takes to prevail! In true Warrior fashion, you’ll get through this and we will celebrate joyfully when better days return to Warrior Nation. Sydnie is a senior at Adena High School. She also attends Ohio University-Chillicothe CC+ classes and PRCTC where she has earned her STNA and Phlebotomy certification. After graduation, Sydnie plans to continue her education with Ohio University to obtain her Bachelor of Arts in Human Biology. This will serve as a foundation for her Master of Science degree in Physician Assistant Practice at Ohio University, Dublin.

Kayanna Noble is a senior at Adena High School and has attended the Pickaway-Ross Career & Technical Center her junior and senior years as a member of their Health Science Technology program. She received her STNA certificate and got a job at Valley View Alzheimer’s Care Center in May 2019. In January 2020, she was placed on full time job placement. Brooklyn Maddux is a senior at Adena High School. Brooklyn will be graduating high school as a State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA) and a Phlebotomist. After high school, Brooklyn will attend the Pickaway-Ross Adult Education program to get her LPN and then plans to go to the University of Rio Grande to further her education as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.
District Update 4-06-2020 / Superintendent John Balzer Hello Adena Schools Families, AS we enter into the rough period of the COVID19 pandemic I want to give you several important reminders. We have a link on our Facebook page or the front of our webpage to connect you to the virtual help desk. The desk is checked frequently and you can usually get a response on the same day you post a request. Children 18 years of age and younger living in the Adena School District are eligible to receive free shelf-stable breakfast and lunch items. We currently provide one week’s worth of meals at each pickup, currently occurring on Thursdays. You can sign up for assistance by going on our Facebook page or district webpage (www.adenalocalschools.com) to fill out an electronic request or call 740-998-4633 and leave a message. If you change residences or double up in a home with a friend or relative please call 740-998-4633 and leave a message with the district office. This machine is checked regularly. We need to keep all student addresses up to date. Also, if you become homeless during the COVID19 pandemic please contact the district office to let us know. We do provide assistance to homeless students and their families to enable them to continue their education. This is also a time to complete the 2020 Census form using your phone, laptop or tablet. It will be CRUCIAL to help keep our tax dollars in Ross County helping our local schools and governments provide badly needed services to our residents and funds to our children. Go to 2020census.gov to complete your form. Thank you for supporting our community and our children! We are continuing instruction via distance learning. Our staff have adapted quickly to using Google Classroom to provide instruction during the closing of the building. With the return of warm weather, we encourage all students to make sure they keep up with their lessons and turn in assignments. School is still functioning, just from a different location. Parents, please help us by establishing your expectations for your children to continue their studies. There will be no instruction on Friday, April 10th and Monday, April 13th. Please use this time for family activities. Also, please remember we have to keep the playground (including the basketball hoops) closed during April. Nobody should come to the school to play on the equipment or use the basketball courts for obvious reasons of safety. We look forward to a time when this will once again be an option for families. Baylee Justice is a senior at Adena High School. After graduation, Baylee will be attending Shawnee State University and strives to earn an associate’s degree in their Physical Therapist Assistant Program. After college, Baylee hopes to work as a physical therapist assistant in a hospital or rehabilitation setting.
James Gregory is a senior at Adena High School. After graduation, James plans on attending Ohio University to pursue a degree in law enforcement. Cade Miner is a senior at Adena High School. Cade was accepted at the University of Findlay and will be attending school there in the fall majoring in nuclear medicine technology. Once Cade completes the Nuclear Medicine Technology program he plans on staying at The University of Findlay to obtain his masters degree and certification in PET scan and MRI.
Jacob Dunn is a senior at Adena High School. After graduation, Jacob will be attending Wright State University to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Education degree in sports science to become an athletic trainer. Words cannot express how proud your dad and I are of you, especially for everything that you have had to overcome during your senior year. Dylan Mathew Reed is a senior at Adena High School and he attends Pickaway Ross CTC. Dylan was a student in the outdoor power tech course at PRCTC and was able to earn enough credits to finish his schooling in December. This allowed Dylan to get a full time job placement and is currently employed at Rumpke in Columbus, Ohio as a night shift mechanic. After graduation, Dylan plans on continuing to work at Rumpke and hopes to one day have his own shop.
Keegan Hall is a senior at Adena High School. After graduation, Keegan plans to attend the University of Rio Grande to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and try out for the cheer squad. Keegan then plans on attending a police academy. Her career goal is to become a detective in a homicide or special victims unit.
Delanie Brown is a senior at Adena High School. After graduation, Delanie plans to continue attending Ohio University-Chillicothe where she has been completing CC+ courses. Delanie was accepted into the Adolescent to Young Adult Integrated Language Arts program at OU-C. Delanie is still indecisive on where she wants to transfer to, but her options are bringing her close to choosing the University of Cincinnati. Delanie plans to pursue a teaching career in high school English.
Carson Long is a senior at Adena High School. After graduation, Carson will be attending Ohio University-Chillicothe in the fall. After completing an associate degree, he will then transfer to the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science for his embalmer and funeral director degree. Carson will then go to work with his dad at Ware Funeral Home in Chillicothe.
Brandon Smith is a senior at Adena High School and has been accepted into the Community College of the Air Force. After graduation, Brandon plans to fulfill his future plans of attending the Community College of the Air Force. Brandon has overcome a great hurdle in his path and we know he is very capable of achieving his goals.
Natalie Lauderman is a senior at Adena High School. Natalie has enlisted in the United States Army - Reserves. After graduation, Natalie is scheduled for boot camp at Fort Jackson, South Carolina in June of 2020. Following boot camp completion, she is scheduled for Advanced Individual Training at Fort Lee, Virginia. Natalie will be pursuing a career in diesel mechanics.

Good Afternoon, this is Dustin England, Adena Middle School Principal, with an important announcement in regards to the 8th Grade Washington D.C. Trip. First, I want to thank all of you for responding to the Google Form. After considering all the responses and communicating with the company we are planning to reschedule the trip for the Fall and will not be taking the trip in May. Second, final payments were due this Friday but with the dates now changing the payments will not be collected at this time. I will let you know in the coming weeks what the plan looks like going forward with payments. Finally, we are doing our best to take everything into consideration with the rescheduling of the Washington D.C. Trip, as students will be freshman and will have other obligations to fulfill. The trip will be one they will never forget and we have been told the Fall is a wonderful time to visit our Nation's capital! Have a good day and enjoy the sunshine.
An Update From John Balzer Hello Everyone! Rober Schuller said, “Tough times never last, but tough people do.” That is the message I want to impart to all Adena students and families. We are finding our way through a tough time. We are experiencing some adversity, and things are likely to get worse before they get better. I want to share with you that we are seeing so many young people rise to the challenge of learning during this difficult time, and they are being led by a tremendously dedicated and persistent group of teachers of whom I am tremendously proud! Every last member of the Adena staff are checking in and asking what more they can do to help out. They are providing meals, They are providing learning opportunities. They are helping people solve problems. We are now trying to comply with the “Stay at Home” order issued by Dr. Acton. We hope all of you will step up and help out by keeping everyone as close to home as is possible, and avoid unnecessary travel or social gatherings. We want anyone who needs to contact us to use email when possible. We won’t be able to answer the phones at school for a while, but we can check the messages remotely. A Message For Our Seniors From Mr. Jones: Scholarship applications can be dropped off at the school this week from 7 a.m.-2 p.m. After this week, the administration will be on a rotating schedule and those hours could change. As of right now, you are returning on April 6th. Future events like prom and graduation have not been cancelled. If we have to POSTPONE, we will. There is nothing written stating we cannot have the graduation ceremony and prom in June if it comes to that. We will do what we can to make adjustments and get through this. Although times are uncertain and anxieties might be rising, try to stay calm and avoid speculation and worrying. Speculation is not a substitute for patience. An Update From Superintendent John Balzer We now begin the 3-week period of distance learning initiated by Governor Dewine. You are not alone. Adena principals have posted updates and information to help you get started with your children. They are available to help you when you need assistance with this project. We need you to help us by making sure your children are completing the lessons and participating in the learning. We don’t know how long this will have to take place, but we do know it will be the method of learning for the next three weeks. We hope for a quick and smooth transition and a speedy return to the school setting as soon as possible. I want to take a moment to review the bigger picture which might help you work with your children to ensure the best chance for a successful experience. Remember to be patient and flexible. We may have to work out a few issues here and there, but we will eventually get this to work in a way that allows our students to make progress. Our teachers will monitor emails and communicate with you electronically as well. First, remember that schools have been closed and activities have ceased in order to slow the spread of the virus. We need to make sure our children avoid crowds and being in closed environments where proper social distance cannot be maintained. Travel and vacations are being discouraged for good reason. In fact, the Governor is stressing that any unnecessary travel should be avoided. The next few weeks are going to be critical as we work to slow the spread of the virus in order to avoid overwhelming the healthcare system. It is a golden opportunity to explore new things… Maybe read a good book, learn a new hobby or pursue some new interests. There are many possibilities for our kids to explore! Ohio has received the waiver needed to allow us to prepare shelf-stable breakfasts and lunches. We will be contacting you soon (likely Monday) to set up a list of students who will need food. We have several volunteers who are ready to help bag the food and distribute it to your residence. There will need to be a minimum of contact during this process to avoid spreading the virus. Students who are currently being served by our counselors at Integrated Services may still receive services from home. Becky Clever, Miki Dawson and Carrie Osborne can be reached by calling 1-800-321-8293. Students can call between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. The after-hours crisis line is 740-649-2552. There is also a way to use Chromebooks which Integrated can explain once you contact them at the toll-free number. The Frankfort Library intends to be open until instructed otherwise. Students will have access to wifi and computers, but everyone should be aware of maintaining proper space and anti-virus protocols. Good Evening! This is Dustin England, Adena Middle School Principal, with an announcement for all middle school students and families. We will be participating in distance learning during this time. All teachers will be assigning lessons to Google Classroom. Your child has used Google Classroom all year in specific classes. They know how to use it and are accustomed to the features. If the students are logging on from a different platform, such as a Windows machine, details for their Google log in were sent home today and those details can be found on our website. Students should be logging in daily to complete assignments that are given by the staff members. This will be tracked through their Google account log ins and assignment completion. Students will want to be proactive in their approach so they do not fall behind. The students may be directed by staff members to use other resources to complete classroom assignments. The staff will be available via Google Classroom communication or through their school email. All staff emails can be found on our school website. Their office hours for communication will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. I encourage you to communicate often with the teacher if you have questions. Please be patient as we work through the issues for the first couple of days. For this to be successful, it will take all of us working as a team in order to see all students be successful. Many Chromebooks were signed out by students today to complete these lessons. A student agreement was signed and sent with your child discussing many different factors, such as damaged or broken Chromebooks. The Chromebooks will need to be returned the day that we all return to school. If your child stated they did not have wifi access to complete the Chromebook assignments, paper packets were developed for them to complete. If your child does not have access to technology to complete the assignments or your child was absent today, arrangements can be made on Monday. The first couple of days will be a tough transition as we are not accustomed to educating our students this way. Please be patient and continue to work with us as we try to do what is best for your child. Thank you for all your support. Other important information, the grading period will end next week and grade cards will be mailed the following week. You will be able to access your child’s grade card from Progressbook. There will be no activities taking place at the school and all extracurricular activities will be stopped until further notice. If you have any questions or technology issues, please call the middle school office at 740-998-2313.

I encourage you to communicate often with each one of them to stay up to date with what is going on in the class. The teachers are also asked to communicate a lot more frequently with each parent. They will have the ability to know when a student is not logging on. It is a team effort of two way communication. Students: This is your chance to challenge yourself to be efficient with your time each day you are at home completing your assignments. Wake up and get yourself in a routine. If you have questions, contact your teacher. Don’t hesitate. We are moving forward. Forget the negative and make the best of it. Don’t dwell. Step forward! If you do not have internet access at your house, we are making arrangements for you to have school Wi-Fi access. That information will come later. Everyone: This community is very resilient and knows how to come together to support each other. I am confident we will do the same now. We can choose to be upset or accept what we have been dealt with and make the best of it. We need to move forward the best we can and focus on what we can do. A Message from Adena Superintendent John Balzer The State of Ohio is working to slow the spread of Coronavirus, hoping to avoid overwhelming our healthcare system, save lives and maintain the safety and wellbeing of the communities in our district. In response to the guidance of Governor Dewine, the Ohio Department of Health and the Ross County Health Department, The Adena Schools will take the following actions: THERE IS SCHOOL ON FRIDAY, MARCH 13th. It is important that students attend this day. Students K-12 will need to remember to take home their chromebooks, chargers and textbooks/materials they need for the duration of the closure. There will be a 3-week Spring Break beginning Monday, March 16th Lunch service will become available for students who have a need for it during the break (We will provide details as they become available) Distance Learning will take place for middle and high school students Elementary students will use packets Staff will be available online, through class dojo for elementary, and via email (details will be provided Friday) Staff will be available on Monday and Tuesday to confirm our systems are up and running correctly. ALL after-school activities and outside activities taking place in or at the school will be cancelled until school resumes. It is extremely important to maintain social distancing. We all need to emphasize to our children they need to stay close to home. Children are carriers of the virus, and we need to exercise caution with the elderly and their proximity to children who could spread the virus without knowing it. We will survive this upsetting and turbulent event. We will rise to the best we can be, the Village will pull together and see ourselves through this situation.
Parents, Grandparents and Caregivers, The Adena Local Schools will monitor the COVID19 (Coronavirus) situation closely. It is important to remain calm, using common-sense measures to prevent the spread of the virus as best we can and work to protect those at greater risk. At this time, we have no reported cases of the virus in Ross County. It is our intent to continue operations with caution, and be prepared to act according to our emergency plan if needed. We will work with, and remain in close contact with the Ross County Health Department and the Ohio Department of Education to make informed decisions that focus on the wellbeing of our students and their families. We will use our Adena App and our Robo-Call system to keep you informed should we need to announce important information or decisions. At this time, please continue to stress to your children the importance of proper hand-washing and keeping hands away from the face, eyes, nose and mouth. Remember, if your child is sick, DO NOT SEND THEM TO SCHOOL. Please contact the office to notify them of the absence. We can work with you on attendance issues as long as you keep us informed of your status. If needed, our middle and high school staff can implement Google Classroom to continue instruction at home on a temporary basis. Should this occur, we will need your help and support to ensure students commit to completing lessons in a timely manner. Although it is not optimal, it would provide us the opportunity to graduate the seniors on the original schedule and avoid the possibility of having them make up days at the end of the year and delay graduation. You should make sure you have child care arrangements on standby in case we have to close down for a couple of weeks or so, and you are required to report to work. We must all work together to bring ourselves through this new situation. We appreciate your willingness to adapt and prepare for disruption to our normal routines.

We have quite the month coming up for the Adena Cafeteria! March starts off with Dr. Suess week, and we have some fun meals planned for our Elementary students! We have St. Patrick's day ( a day early) and we will sneak in a little something for Pi day.This is also National Nutrition Month and we are going to Eat Our Way Through the Alaphabet! So, if your student comes home and tells you about something new they tried at lunch or had a sample of, this is why. We are going to try and find some local food, some exotic food and anything that we are lucky enough to find that starts with "x" lol! We also have the Cincinnati Reds Baseball Opener on March 26. The GREAT news about this is that the Cincinnati Reds have donated tickets to us. Any student that buys a lunch tray will be eligible to enter their name in a drawing for the tickets, After our "Opener Lunch" we will have a drawing and announce the winner! So, come on down to the cafeteria and enjoy everything we have going on!
We have four wrestlers off to districts next weekend at Heath High School! Dalton Metzger, Garrett Simmons, and Isaac Gray all finished second in their weight classes to advance! Zach Seymour placed 5th to advance as an alternate.
A message for high school students: Tickets for the 2020 Informal/Formal Dance can be purchased at tonight’s parent/teacher conferences from 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. They can also be purchased at the door on Saturday night. The dance is from 7-9 p.m. for high school students. Permission forms must be signed before purchasing a ticket. Ticket cost is $5. A reminder that the College Credit Plus meeting is tonight from 6-7 p.m. in the auditeria. Also, we were unable to get enough student participation for a pep bus for Sunday.

A reminder to high school students that our Senior Class has organized a Winter Informal/Formal Dance for this Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. in the auditeria. Please see Mrs. Lewis to buy tickets. You must have your dance permission form turned in and signed by a parent to buy a ticket. Ticket cost is $5. Tickets can be purchased at the door if your signed permission slip is in hand.

We have experienced an apparent software glitch in our active shooter alarm system resulting in a lockdown sequence. All is well and there is no threat. We are currently in contact with the software company to work on correcting and/or preventing another occurrence.
Our wrestling team finished third at the SVC meet and had three individuals claim SVC titles in their weight class! Results: Garrett Simmons 1st at 132lbs Isaac Gray 1st at 152lbs Dalton Metzger 1st at 160lbs Chase Knisley 3rd at 138lbs Zach Seymour 4th at 126lbs Isaac Gray is a two-time SVC champion and Dalton Metzger claimed his third SVC title!
Current weather forecasts indicate potential for lowland flooding tomorrow. Please be alert to weather conditions and the possible disruption of the school schedule to ensure buses can deliver students home safely before roadways become impassable. Remember, a bus is not allowed to drive through a roadway under water even if it is only an inch deep. Hang in there- spring is just around the corner!
Huntington will be hosting an open cornhole tournament immediately following the varsity boys basketball game on Saturday, February 15 vs. Adena. The tournament will be held in the Huntington Middle School Gym. The tournament is open to high school students and adults from either community. Entry for the tournament is $10.00 per player ($20.00 per team). If you do not have a teammate to sign up with please let the organizers know at the time you sign up. Every effort will be made to find you a partner to play with. There will be a prize cash amount for the winners of the tournament. The prize amount will be determined the night of the tournament. The proceeds from tournament entry will be donated to the Smith family to help cover rising medical costs or family needs while both boys (Brandon and Jacob) are hospitalized. Sign-ups will take place in the lobby outside the Huntington High School Gym starting at 5:30 and concluding at the end of the third quarter of the varsity boys game. The tournament will be single elimination. Boards and cornhole bags will be provided. More information will be provided closer to the day of the tournament.

A short while ago a student reported a brief message written on a stall wall with word bombs written under it. As mandated, we followed protocol and notified law enforcement immediately. Dogs were brought over to sweep the building. Nothing was found. Students are now free to go about their day as usual. We appreciate the prompt response from our Sheriff’s department. Also, thanks to Pickaway County Sheriff for their assistance as well! It was great to see our students knowing to report a potential threat- well done! We want to remind all students our counseling services are available to everyone. If you feel frustrated, isolated or hopeless there is help right here in the building for you. Just ask. Due to a scheduling error earlier in the season, the Adena Lady Warriors must forfeit the game with Westfall that was to be played this evening, February 10th. Although Adena listed the game as a scrimmage, I want to apologize to the young ladies who have played valiantly this season as well as their families. 1st semester Awards Ceremonies for 7th and 8th grade students have been rescheduled for Tuesday 2/11/20. 7th grade will start at 8:30 and 8th grade will start at 9:30. Both taking place in the Auditeria.
Evan Ater has qualified for the Central/East/Southeast District meet that will be held at the Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion on the campus of The Ohio State University on Wednesday, February 12th. Evan qualified by placing third in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:04.09 and third in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.29 at the sectional meet at Ohio University. Kevin Kruger, Zach Posey, and Jacob Kashner all finished their season strong by improving their times in the events they competed in. All made a lot of progress throughout the season in their first year swimming. Swim fast, Evan!

Our brand new E-Sports team competed last night in their first pre-season match against Rockcastle County High School in Kentucky. The E-Warriors lost the first match 30-28, but won the second match 43-26. Darion Wagner led the team with 11 eliminations in the first game. Brendan Mitchell, Luke Mark, and Darion Wagner were the top players in the second match. Garrett Clark and Noah Kanniard also competed in our first ever match. Their next pre-season match is next Thursday. The team practices after school and will begin league play in a couple weeks. The team is coached by Mr. Ryan Detty.

We have canceled classes and closed the building in order to completely disinfect our classrooms. Here is an important announcement from the Adena Local Schools Transportation Office. Due to some population shifts within the district we have to make some adjustments in our bus routing to solve some overcrowding issues on several of our buses. The following adjustments will take effect on Monday, January 27th, 2020. Today kicked off Mr. Colopy's Whitetail Deer Project. This project consists of 4 days of hands on learning for his Zoology/Anatomy classes. The week will consist of the following Day 1: Field Dressing/Disection of the deer. This includes teaching of how the respiratory, digestive, and reproductive systems function. Students are taught how to estimate the age of a deer by using the teeth of the animal. Day 2: Skinning/De-boning. Students will remove the hide and de-bone the meat. They will learn how to best remove the meat in order to get it ready for processing. Day 3: Students will process the meat into ground burger, bratwurst and steaks. Day 4: Students will be grouped and will cook the food that they have processed over the past 3 days. Students and faculty will be served as the process becomes complete. Our goal for this project is to give students the opportunity to explore and understand how their food is processed while being given the opportunity to learn hands on. We will continue to post daily updates through Thursday of this week.

The Junior National Honor Society held a fundraiser to benefit St. Jude’s Hospital by selling strips of tape for $1.00. It appears that many students were in the spirit of giving today. We have received a $500.00 donation from a private citizen who wishes to be anonymous that will provide food baskets for Adena students who need a little extra help over the break. Thanks to this fund we have some students who will not have to find a way to get meals while school is closed. Adena Schools just received a surprise gift of $2,000.00 dollars from Walmart's distribution center. Each year the corporate office does a fundraiser challenge with their drivers over a 2-week period which is then gifted to a school. Thanks Walmart! We will place this money in the PBIS fund which directly benefits students through funding rewards and incentives for good behavior throughout the building and on the buses!

Kayla Grooms came to my office in early November inquiring about running a toy drive. I told her she would have to plan it out and then come get approval. Kayla made the plan, set the dates, made the signs, and made announcements to promote the toy drive. In the end, she collected 57 toys and will now make an impact on many children during this season. I'm very proud of the leadership she showed during this project. Great job, Kayla!

In volleyball we had Jenna Martin, Ellie Harper, and Camryn Carroll earn all-league honors. Congrats to all of them!

Pre-sale tickets for the football playoff game against Mechanicsburg are on sale in the high school office. They will be on sale in the office from 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. until the end of the day on Friday. The cost is $8. The cost is $9 if you purchase them at the gate. State Superintendent of Instruction Paolo DeMaria was invited to visit Adena Schools and he accepted! The following are some pictures of the visit. Ohio is focused on the whole child approach to education. We looked at all aspects of our school- food, transportation, instruction, support services, etc. We talked about our elementary reading program and its progress, the middle school leadership program, technology instruction, and the high school momentum in climate, academics and student growth measures. We appreciate the time Superintendent DeMaria spent with us and encourage him to support reforms that would allow smaller schools to demonstrate their report card progress on a level playing field with the large districts when working with the legislature. Our Division III sectional championship volleyball game against Piketon is now being played at 11:00 a.m. this Saturday, October 19th at Adena High School. Both schools agreed to move up the start time, due to our homecoming dance starting at 7 p.m. that evening.
We want to let our parents and care givers know that we had a report of a social media post that prompted concerns for the safety of our school and our students. Upon examining and assessing the post, we reported it immediately to the Ross County Sheriff’s Department. We do consider the statement to be deliberately inflammatory in nature. At this time we do not see a need to implement special security measures. The student who posted the statement is not in school and has been instructed to remain out of school pending further disciplinary action. We will work cooperatively with the Sheriff’s Department and consider filing charges with the Prosecutor’s Office going forward. We will update you on this situation when we have more information.

Great weekend for Adena MS sports! The 8th grade volleyball team won the SVC Tournament and finished the season 17-1. Great class and character shown by these young ladies all season. The volleyball team even spent a Saturday morning cleaning up around the school and the community. Cross country runner Ryan Richendollar finished 1st overall in the SVC Cross Country Meet with a time of 12:33 and Jessica Crocker finished 5th overall in the girls with a time of 15:13. I’m very proud of all our fall sports teams and their efforts. Keep up the hard work!

As a follow up precaution we invited the Sheriff’s department to bring in their K-9 teams to sweep the building. Both the drug dog and the bomb dog found nothing in their searches. Adena High School was well represented at the OHSAA Foundation Student Leadership Conference. Our students got to listen to some great speakers that delivered some powerful messages. They were actively engaged in each speaker’s message with activities that brought 1600 students from around the state together. These students will now work on taking the messages they heard and spread them to the rest of the student body.

This Sunday, September 29th, at 5:00 pm, we will be holding a parents' meeting in the tiered area for all boys in grades 3-6 who are interested in playing basketball. At this meeting we will discuss the changes to the biddy basketball program, meet the coaches, discuss the schedule, and answer any potential questions. Following the parents' meeting we will hold our first sign-up. We are looking forward to a great 2019-2020 season!

Congrats to Sierra Ward! She was awarded the “Congress Of Future Medical Leaders Award of Excellence”. Sierra attended the Congress of Future Medical Leaders this past summer that was held in Boston, Massachusetts. During her visit, she was able to watch a live surgery and was given the opportunity to ask the surgeon questions about the surgery. She was taught by some Nobel Prize winners in their field of medicine and some medical school academic leaders.
Last years 6th graders were challenged at camp to develop a community project that would positively impact the community. The student chose to build a “Gaga pit” for the playground to improve and promote the health and well being of students. The students had to develop a plan of action for this project and fund-raise to purchase the required items. The project has been completed and a brand new Gaga pit is located on the playground. Special thanks goes out to Mr. Bluck and his high school Ag class for the building of the pit.
Special thanks to the Tim Hortons Foundation Camp, Camp Kentahten, for giving our 6th graders an opportunity to attend their camp. While at camp students were challenged to become better leaders and make an impact on our community. The students decided to impact our community this year by working with our elementary students to improve their reading. More to come soon on this project! We are eager to see the great work the students will do!

Senior M.A.D.E members had their first opportunity to paint their parking spot last night. This is the second year our students have had this opportunity and they really enjoy it. Thanks to Ms. Mess, our M.A.D.E coordinator, the student participation in our Drug Free Clubs of America club continues to grow!

Following district protocol, EMS was summoned who then assessed the situation and recommended further action. The child and the parent are following up on assessment and treatment at this time and the school is operating as normal. The football game against Marion Elgin that is scheduled for this Friday has been cancelled. Elgin made this decision due to them now only having 18 players. The athletic department is in the process of finding another opponent for this Friday.

There will be a parent meeting for any 8th grade student who is interested in the Washington D.C. trip for Spring 2020 on Thursday, September 5th at 7:00 p.m. This meeting will be held to give parents and students an opportunity to find out more about the trip and fundraising opportunities. We will need confirmation with a non-refundable down payment of $100 by September 27th, 2019 to lock in your spot.
The Warrior Club met Friday and the students have come up with these themes for the fall sports season. Students in all grade levels are encouraged to participate. The Warrior Club is our school spirit group that was organized to get students more involved with our after school activities and to bring them closer as a student body. The marching band will also continue to kickstart our weekends by marching the halls at the end of every Friday during the fall season! Go Warriors!
Good evening! This is Dustin England, Adena Middle School Principal, with important information for middle school families as we embark on a new school year. We hope that everyone has had an enjoyable summer and we are excited to welcome all the students back to Adena for the 2019-20 school year. All back to school information has been sent and you should be receiving it very soon. If you have recently registered your child in the district, your packet may not be sent until later this week. The contents of the mail will have important information pertaining to the start of the school year. Such as, welcome letter, school schedule, and medical forms. 7th grade students will also receive another letter about immunizations that are required for all 7th grade students. The open house will be held on Monday, August 19th from 5-6:30 pm. All students and parents are encouraged to show up and get familiar with their new teachers. A 5th and 6th grade orientation will take place in the auditeria that evening starting with the 5th grade at 5 p.m. and the 6th grade at 5:30. During this meeting we will discuss important details for new middle school students. The 6th grade parents are encouraged to attend because we will discuss the details of the 6th grade camp trip that will take place in early September. If you do not receive your schedule in the mail, one can be obtained at the open house in the middle/ high school office. Reminder you may return your emergency medical form that evening as well to the office secretary. The homeroom for a 5th grade student is listed as the tenth period known as the attendance period. All 6-8 students will report to first period on their schedule. The first day for students will be Wednesday, August 21st. For those students that need transportation to PRCTC, Adena will have bus number 17 in the loading zone at school at 7:45 a.m. starting on August 14th. It will also pick you up from PRCTC at the end of the day and return back to Adena Local Schools around 2:50 p.m. You are also reminded to check our communique that is posted on the Adena bulletin board in the PRCTC cafeteria for updates from Adena. This post is for the high school: As another year approaches, I am working on incentives for our PBIS program. It is referred to as B.L.U.E. This stands for Behavior Leading Us To Excellence. This will be our second year of this program. Students are rewarded at the end of every nine weeks for good grades, behavior, and attendance. Last year, some rewards included bowling, Triple Crown, and a trip to DanBarry Cinemas. Gift cards and a free lunch of their choice was given to the student of the month. These were paid for by the principal. All these incentives are in place for this year, but I am looking for donations from businesses for a drawing that will be held at the end of the 2019-2020 school year. The drawing will be for students that meet the rewards criteria for all four nine week grading periods. The 2019-2020 school year is approaching fast. Open House is scheduled for Monday, August 19th from 5:00-6:30 p.m. Freshman orientation will take place at 4:45 p.m. in the high school gymnasium on August 19th. Schedules will be sent out on August 12th, along with the Chromebook agreement form, and school calendar. Mr. Buchwalter will be distributing the Chromebooks in the library during the open house. Attention to all Adena Parents/Guardians of Kindergarten students! We plan to mail letters out on July 29 informing students of classroom assignments. The letters will also contain important information about orientation sessions and when to start school. Senior Johnathan Cokonougher, and Juniors Slate Kellis, Trey Timmons competed yesterday, Saturday, July 13th at the National Championship High School Clay/Target League in Mason, Michigan. After qualifying for the Nationals by having a high 5 week league average, 3 out of 14 members advanced to compete at Nationals. 1,688 students from all over the United States competed individually. Johnathan shot a 88 out of 100 with a reserve run of 10, Trey Timmons placed 436th shooting a 92 out of 100 with a reverse score of 1 , and Slate Kellis placed 264th shooting a 94 of 100 with a reverse run of 9. At National level the first 400 individuals place in order to compete. Slate Kellis qualified and will be competing today, Sunday, July 14th. Our students and staff are returning home today from their trip to the Dominican Republic! Mrs. Wiseman organized a great experience for them. Here is her summary of their final day: “Our last day in Dominican Republic was a busy one! We started with a visit to Altos de Chavon, a village where artists are trained and which was built in the 16th century Mediterranean style. Afterwards, we braved a zip line course over the Cumayasa River. When we got back to Santo Domingo, we did some shopping and had our send-off dinner at a wonderful Dominican restaurant. And what a surprise when dinner turned into a dance party!”
Mrs. Wiseman’s update from the Dominican Republic: “No trip to Dominican Republic would be complete without a day at the beach! Yesterday we took a catamaran out to an island with beautiful white sand beaches and crystal clear water. We spent the day lounging under palm trees, swimming in the sea, playing volleyball, and enjoying a barbecue. We came back on a speed boat for our last night in Bayahíbe. This morning we head back to Santo Domingo, and tomorrow we fly home!”
Mrs. Wiseman’s updated from yesterday’s activities in the Dominican Republic: “Yesterday we began the day with a hike through a national park to learn about the flora and fauna of the island. We learned how the indigenous Tainos used the plants for food, medicine, and construction, and how conservation efforts have helped to maintain this patch of land and its distinct biodiversity. At the end of the hike was an unforgettable experience. There was a cave with a pristinely clear river running through it, and we got some swimming time there inside the cave. Our guide held flashlights for us while we dove into the cold water. There’s something very unique about floating along in the dark watching bats fly in and out of their holes in the cave walls!”
Our students had another day of great experiences in the Dominican Republic yesterday. An update from Mrs. Wiseman: “Yesterday we visited the boys’ orphanage from the same organization, Niños de Cristo. Once again we had a tour of the facility, and our group had a blast playing basketball, soccer, balloons, and toy cars with the boys. We were also able to go pick up supplies for them, most of which were groceries to keep the growing boys fed! This organization is doing great work to care for and protect the vulnerable young people of this country. It has been a blessing to be involved in meeting and supporting them. After the orphanage visit, it was time for some much needed relaxation! We spent the afternoon swimming and sunbathing, and some even participated in a dance lesson to learn bachata, a local favorite.”
Our students will bring back a lot of great memories from their trip to the Dominican Republic. Mrs. Wiseman’s summary of yesterday: “Yesterday we spent the day at the Orfanato Niñas de Cristo (Daughters of Christ Orphanage). There are 42 girls ages infant to 18 who live there. From the moment we got off the bus, the girls ran up to us and grabbed our hands to lead us inside. The administrator gave us a tour, and then we spent the day playing kickball, volleyball, basketball, and tennis with the girls. We also served them lunch and had the opportunity to make a grocery store run to buy some supplies that they needed. I was so touched to see how our students interacted with them. From cuddling babies to making leaf pies with toddlers, running with the children and letting the teens do our hair and nails, it was a great day! Some of ours had tears in their eyes as we said our goodbyes. It was a very special experience.”
Coach Christina Martin is looking for more students to try cross country. She has set a goal to establish four teams this year. If you are interested, the team meets to run at 8 a.m. on Monday and Wednesday next week. Students in grades 6th through 12th are invited.
Some of our students are getting a great learning experience in the Dominican Republic. Mrs. Wiseman organized this trip for her Spanish class students. She is keeping us updated. The following is a description of their day yesterday. This was their highlights. Mrs. Wiseman: “We spent the day walking in Santo Domingo and exploring surrounding areas. We saw the colonial part of the city including Christopher Columbus’ son’s palace, the first cathedral of the Americas where Christopher Columbus’ remains were found (now housed in the memorial lighthouse which we also saw), Tres Ojos Caves and Cave of Maravillas which had indigenous cave drawings from the Tainos. Tomorrow we will go visit the orphanage.”
Our trap shooting team did very well today at the Ohio High School State Trap Tournament in Delaware, Ohio. As a team, they finished fifth out of thirteen teams with a score of 436 points! Individually, Trey Timmons had an overall score of 93 to place third in the varsity boys’ division. Reece Kerns placed third in the conference in the girls’ JV division. As a team, they also finished third in the conference this season. At the Division III OHSAA State Track Meet today, Tate Myers finished 7th in the 400m dash preliminaries with a time of 51:35. Great season Tate!

The baseball team claimed a Division III Sectional Championship this afternoon with 5-4 win over Lynchburg Clay! They now play Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Division III District Semifinal against Fairland at Chillicothe VA Memorial Stadium.

Today marks the beginning of Teacher Appreciation Week at Adena. Teaching has always been a challenging job. Today more than ever teachers are facing challenges nobody imagined would be part of the daily job- emotional trauma, families in chaos, constant accountability rule changes and added unfounded mandates. We want to let everyone know we had to deal with an elementary bathroom incident in which a girl had written, “I have a bomb in my book bag.” Following the protocol of assessment we determined it was not a credible threat but we still have to contact the Ross County Sheriff to file a report and concur on our assessment. The Sheriff’s department concurred it was not a credible threat as well. However, as an added precaution I asked for the Pickaway County bomb sniffing dog to check the lockers. The dog found nothing. I appreciate the quick work of both Ross and Pickaway County Sheriff’s Departments. Parents, we have to sit down with our children and make sure they understand in this day and age that actions like this are not appropriate or acceptable under any circumstances. PLEASE sit down with your children and have the crucial discussion regarding being responsible for your actions and knowing how to think before acting. We have to work together to make sure our school can operate safely at all times. Each time we have to deal with an event like this we undermine the overall sensitivity to safety among our students and hamper our first responders with unnecessary responses. We will always act to preserve the safety of our students. We hope that you will help support us by making sure all students know their responsibilities in this process as well. Thank you.
The Chillicothe & Ross County Library has a poetry contest each April for National Poetry Month. The contest is open to all students in grades K-12 in Ross County. Good Afternoon, This is Superintendent John Balzer with an update on today’s incident. The Ross County Sheriff’s office requested and received the Pickaway County canine unit to take through the building and check lockers and cars in the parking lot. The search did not yield any contraband and Law Enforcement continues to monitor the building to provide peace of mind and reassure students of their safety. I want to take a moment to thank the Adena Staff for their quick response and precision with handling the protocols for the lockdown. We want to thank Sheriff Lavender and all the deputies who responded and assisted us today. Most importantly, I want to thank the students who responded to the training provided to them regarding (If you see or hear something, SAY something.) As always, the safety and wellbeing of students and staff are our first priority. Knowing an incident like this can be upsetting to experience, if your student or you as a parent or guardian would like to speak with one of our Integrated Services Counselors or Adena Guidance Counselor concerning today’s incident, they are available to assist you. The current lockdown at Adena Local Schols has been lifted. Authorities have removed an airsoft gun that a student had brought to school. Every student Pre K-12 is safe.
The Junior Class recently participated in a mulch sale to raise money for their senior trip to Walt Disney World next year. A trip that Mr. Mathis has been planning for the class. Overall the students sold 1800 bags of mulch and earned $1 per bag towards their senior trip. Last Saturday, students and some teachers met early at the school and to load trucks, trailers, and a dump truck to make deliveries to their customers. Some even spread the mulch for their customers.
Results are in for the Farm Business Management online contest. Garrett Simmons, Maddie Huff, and Laura Meyer competed against 719 students from around the state. Garrett Simmons placed in the top 40%; Laura placed in the top 25%, and Maddie placed 8th overall, putting her in the top 1%! Congratulations to all participants!
In honor of National Poetry Month, Ms. Nusbaum’s Advanced English III block participated in Poetry Coffeehouse this morning. Each student was required to memorize a poem from an American poet and create an interpretive performance with costumes, props, and art. Every performance was memorable with its own unique mark, and the students worked hard on making this a great success.

Adena Ag Day April 11th, Adena Local Schools will host the Brothers of Wilmington College FarmHouse along with the Sisters of Sigma Alpha Sorority (Agricultural professional fraternity and sorority) as they present Ag Day to the students of grades K-4. Students will experience farm equipment, livestock and demonstrations along with agricultural related topics that students in our area would find relevant to their daily lives. The event will take place from 9:30 to 2:55 (weather permitting). We would like to invite area farmers to attend as well! Students in Miss Lovensheimer’s first grade class welcomed baby chicks to class this week. Students watched the eggs for three weeks as the incubator did its work. Miss Lovensheimer brought the project to her students as a result of a workshop offered by The Ohio State University this summer. What a great way to connect Adena’s students to their agricultural heritage! Pictured are Alexis Saltz and Eme Sever who really became involved with the project. The district has been working hard on a new website over the past couple of months. We hope to launch this in the next few weeks. Exciting things are coming in the near future. The development of an Adena Local Schools App is also in the works.
