Our Division III sectional championship volleyball game against Piketon is now being played at 11:00 a.m. this Saturday, October 19th at Adena High School. Both schools agreed to move up the start time, due to our homecoming dance starting at 7 p.m. that evening.
We want to let our parents and care givers know that we had a report of a social media post that prompted concerns for the safety of our school and our students. Upon examining and assessing the post, we reported it immediately to the Ross County Sheriff’s Department. We do consider the statement to be deliberately inflammatory in nature. At this time we do not see a need to implement special security measures. The student who posted the statement is not in school and has been instructed to remain out of school pending further disciplinary action. We will work cooperatively with the Sheriff’s Department and consider filing charges with the Prosecutor’s Office going forward. We will update you on this situation when we have more information.

Great weekend for Adena MS sports! The 8th grade volleyball team won the SVC Tournament and finished the season 17-1. Great class and character shown by these young ladies all season. The volleyball team even spent a Saturday morning cleaning up around the school and the community. Cross country runner Ryan Richendollar finished 1st overall in the SVC Cross Country Meet with a time of 12:33 and Jessica Crocker finished 5th overall in the girls with a time of 15:13. I’m very proud of all our fall sports teams and their efforts. Keep up the hard work!

We want to let everyone know in spite of all the rumors you might be hearing all is good at Adena today. We have had no new threats since the one we investigated last week. As a follow up precaution we invited the Sheriff’s department to bring in their K-9 teams to sweep the building. Both the drug dog and the bomb dog found nothing in their searches. As always, if there is an incident we will notify you and let you know how we are responding to the situation. We appreciate your concern and we want you to continue to be vigilant. Adena High School was well represented at the OHSAA Foundation Student Leadership Conference. Our students got to listen to some great speakers that delivered some powerful messages. They were actively engaged in each speaker’s message with activities that brought 1600 students from around the state together. These students will now work on taking the messages they heard and spread them to the rest of the student body.

This Sunday, September 29th, at 5:00 pm, we will be holding a parents' meeting in the tiered area for all boys in grades 3-6 who are interested in playing basketball. At this meeting we will discuss the changes to the biddy basketball program, meet the coaches, discuss the schedule, and answer any potential questions. Following the parents' meeting we will hold our first sign-up. We are looking forward to a great 2019-2020 season!

Congrats to Sierra Ward! She was awarded the “Congress Of Future Medical Leaders Award of Excellence”. Sierra attended the Congress of Future Medical Leaders this past summer that was held in Boston, Massachusetts. During her visit, she was able to watch a live surgery and was given the opportunity to ask the surgeon questions about the surgery. She was taught by some Nobel Prize winners in their field of medicine and some medical school academic leaders.
Last years 6th graders were challenged at camp to develop a community project that would positively impact the community. The student chose to build a “Gaga pit” for the playground to improve and promote the health and well being of students. The students had to develop a plan of action for this project and fund-raise to purchase the required items. The project has been completed and a brand new Gaga pit is located on the playground. Special thanks goes out to Mr. Bluck and his high school Ag class for the building of the pit.
Special thanks to the Tim Hortons Foundation Camp, Camp Kentahten, for giving our 6th graders an opportunity to attend their camp. While at camp students were challenged to become better leaders and make an impact on our community. The students decided to impact our community this year by working with our elementary students to improve their reading. More to come soon on this project! We are eager to see the great work the students will do!

Senior M.A.D.E members had their first opportunity to paint their parking spot last night. This is the second year our students have had this opportunity and they really enjoy it. Thanks to Ms. Mess, our M.A.D.E coordinator, the student participation in our Drug Free Clubs of America club continues to grow!

The football game against Marion Elgin that is scheduled for this Friday has been cancelled. Elgin made this decision due to them now only having 18 players. The athletic department is in the process of finding another opponent for this Friday.

There will be a parent meeting for any 8th grade student who is interested in the Washington D.C. trip for Spring 2020 on Thursday, September 5th at 7:00 p.m. This meeting will be held to give parents and students an opportunity to find out more about the trip and fundraising opportunities. The Warrior Club met Friday and the students have come up with these themes for the fall sports season. Students in all grade levels are encouraged to participate. The Warrior Club is our school spirit group that was organized to get students more involved with our after school activities and to bring them closer as a student body. The marching band will also continue to kickstart our weekends by marching the halls at the end of every Friday during the fall season! Go Warriors!
Good evening! This is Dustin England, Adena Middle School Principal, with important information for middle school families as we embark on a new school year. We hope that everyone has had an enjoyable summer and we are excited to welcome all the students back to Adena for the 2019-20 school year. All back to school information has been sent and you should be receiving it very soon. If you have recently registered your child in the district, your packet may not be sent until later this week. The contents of the mail will have important information pertaining to the start of the school year. Such as, welcome letter, school schedule, and medical forms. 7th grade students will also receive another letter about immunizations that are required for all 7th grade students. The open house will be held on Monday, August 19th from 5-6:30 pm. All students and parents are encouraged to show up and get familiar with their new teachers. A 5th and 6th grade orientation will take place in the auditeria that evening starting with the 5th grade at 5 p.m. and the 6th grade at 5:30. During this meeting we will discuss important details for new middle school students. The 6th grade parents are encouraged to attend because we will discuss the details of the 6th grade camp trip that will take place in early September. If you do not receive your schedule in the mail, one can be obtained at the open house in the middle/ high school office. Reminder you may return your emergency medical form that evening as well to the office secretary. The homeroom for a 5th grade student is listed as the tenth period known as the attendance period. All 6-8 students will report to first period on their schedule. The first day for students will be Wednesday, August 21st. For those students that need transportation to PRCTC, Adena will have bus number 17 in the loading zone at school at 7:45 a.m. starting on August 14th. This post is for the high school: As another year approaches, I am working on incentives for our PBIS program. It is referred to as B.L.U.E. This stands for Behavior Leading Us To Excellence. This will be our second year of this program. Students are rewarded at the end of every nine weeks for good grades, behavior, and attendance. Last year, some rewards included bowling, Triple Crown, and a trip to DanBarry Cinemas. Gift cards and a free lunch of their choice was given to the student of the month. These were paid for by the principal. All these incentives are in place for this year, but I am looking for donations from businesses for a drawing that will be held at the end of the 2019-2020 school year. The drawing will be for students that meet the rewards criteria for all four nine week grading periods. Senior Johnathan Cokonougher, and Juniors Slate Kellis, Trey Timmons competed yesterday, Saturday, July 13th at the National Championship High School Clay/Target League in Mason, Michigan. After qualifying for the Nationals by having a high 5 week league average, 3 out of 14 members advanced to compete at Nationals. 1,688 students from all over the United States competed individually. Johnathan shot a 88 out of 100 with a reserve run of 10, Trey Timmons placed 436th shooting a 92 out of 100 with a reverse score of 1 , and Slate Kellis placed 264th shooting a 94 of 100 with a reverse run of 9. At National level the first 400 individuals place in order to compete. Slate Kellis qualified and will be competing today, Sunday, July 14th. Our students and staff are returning home today from their trip to the Dominican Republic! Mrs. Wiseman organized a great experience for them. Here is her summary of their final day: “Our last day in Dominican Republic was a busy one! We started with a visit to Altos de Chavon, a village where artists are trained and which was built in the 16th century Mediterranean style. Afterwards, we braved a zip line course over the Cumayasa River. When we got back to Santo Domingo, we did some shopping and had our send-off dinner at a wonderful Dominican restaurant. And what a surprise when dinner turned into a dance party!”
Mrs. Wiseman’s update from the Dominican Republic: “No trip to Dominican Republic would be complete without a day at the beach! Yesterday we took a catamaran out to an island with beautiful white sand beaches and crystal clear water. We spent the day lounging under palm trees, swimming in the sea, playing volleyball, and enjoying a barbecue. We came back on a speed boat for our last night in Bayahíbe. This morning we head back to Santo Domingo, and tomorrow we fly home!”
Mrs. Wiseman’s updated from yesterday’s activities in the Dominican Republic: “Yesterday we began the day with a hike through a national park to learn about the flora and fauna of the island. We learned how the indigenous Tainos used the plants for food, medicine, and construction, and how conservation efforts have helped to maintain this patch of land and its distinct biodiversity. At the end of the hike was an unforgettable experience. There was a cave with a pristinely clear river running through it, and we got some swimming time there inside the cave. Our guide held flashlights for us while we dove into the cold water. There’s something very unique about floating along in the dark watching bats fly in and out of their holes in the cave walls!”
Our students had another day of great experiences in the Dominican Republic yesterday. An update from Mrs. Wiseman: “Yesterday we visited the boys’ orphanage from the same organization, Niños de Cristo. Once again we had a tour of the facility, and our group had a blast playing basketball, soccer, balloons, and toy cars with the boys. We were also able to go pick up supplies for them, most of which were groceries to keep the growing boys fed! This organization is doing great work to care for and protect the vulnerable young people of this country. It has been a blessing to be involved in meeting and supporting them. After the orphanage visit, it was time for some much needed relaxation! We spent the afternoon swimming and sunbathing, and some even participated in a dance lesson to learn bachata, a local favorite.”
Our students will bring back a lot of great memories from their trip to the Dominican Republic. Mrs. Wiseman’s summary of yesterday: “Yesterday we spent the day at the Orfanato Niñas de Cristo (Daughters of Christ Orphanage). There are 42 girls ages infant to 18 who live there. From the moment we got off the bus, the girls ran up to us and grabbed our hands to lead us inside. The administrator gave us a tour, and then we spent the day playing kickball, volleyball, basketball, and tennis with the girls. We also served them lunch and had the opportunity to make a grocery store run to buy some supplies that they needed. I was so touched to see how our students interacted with them. From cuddling babies to making leaf pies with toddlers, running with the children and letting the teens do our hair and nails, it was a great day! Some of ours had tears in their eyes as we said our goodbyes. It was a very special experience.”
Coach Christina Martin is looking for more students to try cross country. She has set a goal to establish four teams this year. If you are interested, the team meets to run at 8 a.m. on Monday and Wednesday next week. Students in grades 6th through 12th are invited.
Some of our students are getting a great learning experience in the Dominican Republic. Mrs. Wiseman organized this trip for her Spanish class students. She is keeping us updated. The following is a description of their day yesterday. This was their highlights. Mrs. Wiseman: “We spent the day walking in Santo Domingo and exploring surrounding areas. We saw the colonial part of the city including Christopher Columbus’ son’s palace, the first cathedral of the Americas where Christopher Columbus’ remains were found (now housed in the memorial lighthouse which we also saw), Tres Ojos Caves and Cave of Maravillas which had indigenous cave drawings from the Tainos. Tomorrow we will go visit the orphanage.”
Our trap shooting team did very well today at the Ohio High School State Trap Tournament in Delaware, Ohio. As a team, they finished fifth out of thirteen teams with a score of 436 points! Individually, Trey Timmons had an overall score of 93 to place third in the varsity boys’ division. Reece Kerns placed third in the conference in the girls’ JV division. As a team, they also finished third in the conference this season. Today marks the beginning of Teacher Appreciation Week at Adena. Teaching has always been a challenging job. Today more than ever teachers are facing challenges nobody imagined would be part of the daily job- emotional trauma, families in chaos, constant accountability rule changes and added unfounded mandates. We want to let everyone know we had to deal with an elementary bathroom incident in which a girl had written, “I have a bomb in my book bag.” Following the protocol of assessment we determined it was not a credible threat but we still have to contact the Ross County Sheriff to file a report and concur on our assessment. The Sheriff’s department concurred it was not a credible threat as well. However, as an added precaution I asked for the Pickaway County bomb sniffing dog to check the lockers. The dog found nothing. I appreciate the quick work of both Ross and Pickaway County Sheriff’s Departments. Parents, we have to sit down with our children and make sure they understand in this day and age that actions like this are not appropriate or acceptable under any circumstances. PLEASE sit down with your children and have the crucial discussion regarding being responsible for your actions and knowing how to think before acting. We have to work together to make sure our school can operate safely at all times. Each time we have to deal with an event like this we undermine the overall sensitivity to safety among our students and hamper our first responders with unnecessary responses. We will always act to preserve the safety of our students. We hope that you will help support us by making sure all students know their responsibilities in this process as well. Thank you.
The Chillicothe & Ross County Library has a poetry contest each April for National Poetry Month. The contest is open to all students in grades K-12 in Ross County. Once again, Adena Students have made a great showing in this contest! There will be a mandatory Washington D.C. trip parent meeting on Tuesday, May 7th, 2019 in the Rubber Gymnasium @ 6 PM. During this meeting we will discuss the travel plans, student information, student rules, and behaviors. FREE SPORTS PHYSICALS @ Adena HS By: Adena Sports Medicine Athletic Trainers and Physicians When: Wednesday, May 1 Time: During the morning hours of school, approx. 8:30am. Students will be called to the HS gym by class. Who: Incoming grades 9-12 How: Information packets will be in the HS office by the end of the week. Packets will also be passed out to Spring sports athletes. **If you already have a PRIVIT account, simply update your information, and electronically sign the form. We will be going paperless this year, so no need to print your physical. Just have it completed by Wednesday morning.

Good Afternoon, This is Superintendent John Balzer with an update on today’s incident. The Ross County Sheriff’s office requested and received the Pickaway County canine unit to take through the building and check lockers and cars in the parking lot. The search did not yield any contraband and Law Enforcement continues to monitor the building to provide peace of mind and reassure students of their safety. I want to take a moment to thank the Adena Staff for their quick response and precision with handling the protocols for the lockdown. We want to thank Sheriff Lavender and all the deputies who responded and assisted us today. Most importantly, I want to thank the students who responded to the training provided to them regarding (If you see or hear something, SAY something.) As always, the safety and wellbeing of students and staff are our first priority. Knowing an incident like this can be upsetting to experience, if your student or you as a parent or guardian would like to speak with one of our Integrated Services Counselors or Adena Guidance Counselor concerning today’s incident, they are available to assist you. The current lockdown at Adena Local Schols has been lifted. Authorities have removed an airsoft gun that a student had brought to school. Every student Pre K-12 is safe.
The Junior Class recently participated in a mulch sale to raise money for their senior trip to Walt Disney World next year. A trip that Mr. Mathis has been planning for the class. Overall the students sold 1800 bags of mulch and earned $1 per bag towards their senior trip. Last Saturday, students and some teachers met early at the school and to load trucks, trailers, and a dump truck to make deliveries to their customers. Some even spread the mulch for their customers.
Results are in for the Farm Business Management online contest. Garrett Simmons, Maddie Huff, and Laura Meyer competed against 719 students from around the state. Garrett Simmons placed in the top 40%; Laura placed in the top 25%, and Maddie placed 8th overall, putting her in the top 1%! Congratulations to all participants!
In honor of National Poetry Month, Ms. Nusbaum’s Advanced English III block participated in Poetry Coffeehouse this morning. Each student was required to memorize a poem from an American poet and create an interpretive performance with costumes, props, and art. Every performance was memorable with its own unique mark, and the students worked hard on making this a great success.

Adena Ag Day April 11th, Adena Local Schools will host the Brothers of Wilmington College FarmHouse along with the Sisters of Sigma Alpha Sorority (Agricultural professional fraternity and sorority) as they present Ag Day to the students of grades K-4. Students will experience farm equipment, livestock and demonstrations along with agricultural related topics that students in our area would find relevant to their daily lives. The event will take place from 9:30 to 2:55 (weather permitting). We would like to invite area farmers to attend as well! Students in Miss Lovensheimer’s first grade class welcomed baby chicks to class this week. Students watched the eggs for three weeks as the incubator did its work. Miss Lovensheimer brought the project to her students as a result of a workshop offered by The Ohio State University this summer. What a great way to connect Adena’s students to their agricultural heritage! Pictured are Alexis Saltz and Eme Sever who really became involved with the project. The district has been working hard on a new website over the past couple of months. We hope to launch this in the next few weeks. Exciting things are coming in the near future. The development of an Adena Local Schools App is also in the works.
